Children's Health Awareness Day
22 June 2024
The Korean UK Medical Association (KUMA) hosted the first ever Children's Health Awareness Day on Saturday 22nd June 2024. This exciting event was designed for elementary and middle school students attending the London Korean School (LKS) in South London. KUMA members taught skills in first aid, recognising an unwell person, calling for help and hand washing. These were delivered in a balanced combination of didactic teaching and interactive role plays in smaller groups.

Divided by age, there were three separate sessions for different year groups. All students learned how to call for the ambulance through 999 when they find an unresponsive person. This was further enriched by their keen participation in scenarios with KUMA members, learning to put someone in the recovery position, and with models used in hospital simulation training. Everyone was engaged in learning effective resuscitation techniques through the cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) mannequins, later demonstrated in a fun competitive game.

Younger elementary students learned the different situations that require urgent help: choking, bleeding and unresponsiveness. Highlighted was the importance of recognising when to seek help from an adult Using the choking rescue trainer vests, they had a chance to gently practise back blows. Additionally they learned to wash hands thoroughly, testing their technique through a UV torch which was sensationally popular. Throughout the day KUMA members tailored teaching to different ages, checking their understanding after each workshop.

As each session came to a close, students expressed their confidence in identifying situations requiring help and calling for the ambulance. Some of the older students showed interest in Medicine, asking about GCSE requirements for the university degree. KUMA members were able to build rapport, some of whom attended LKS many years ago.
As Dr Chang Kim emphasises the importance of checking someone’s breathing, two students bring their ears closer to each other.
KUMA’s first ever Children's Health Awareness Day was, without a doubt, a success thanks to the students’ and teachers’ enthusiasm. KUMA hope to continue providing an educational platform for the Korean community, including children, about medical care.
