Our Collaboration with Korean UK Medical Assocation Students (KUMAS)

KUMAS (Korean UK Medical Association - Students) is a non-profit medical association representing medical and dental students of Korean heritage studying in the UK. Since its establishment in 2006 as KMDA-UK (Korean Medical and Dental Association - UK), KUMAS now stands as the integrated student body of KUMA. The primary mission statement of KUMAS is to facilitate social networking between the members in mind of promoting global professionalism in the doctors of tomorrow.

The collaboration between KUMA and KUMAS embodies the essence of professional development and knowledge sharing within the Korean medical professional community in the United Kingdom. This partnership serves as a conduit for doctors to provide mentorship and career advice to medical students, creating a supportive environment that promotes learning, networking, and community engagement.

Mentorship

KUMA offers the Mentorship Programme in collaboration with KUMAS, where medical students are paired with doctors who serve as their mentors. The mentors are selected based on the students' preferences or the types of questions they have. This program allows students to seek guidance on training pathways, career opportunities, and the overall experience of living and working as a Korean doctor in the UK. Additionally, students can also get involved in ongoing projects run by their mentors to earn additional points for their CVs.

Career's Advice

KUMA have held career fairs as formal events, which offers an opportunity for medical students to interact with doctors from various specialties. This platform enables students to gain insights into different medical fields, ask questions, and make informed decisions about their future career paths. Any collaborative event with KUMAS offers both formal and informal opportunities for career's advice!

Outreach

KUMA's Health Awareness Day is a community-focused event where KUMA doctors help the Korean elderly population in London by providing basic health check-ups and improving their general health awareness. Medical students also play a vital role in this project by assisting with the health check-ups, where they can gain valuable experience by communicating with the patients.

Conference Collaboration

Since 2006, KUMA has partnered with KUMAS to organize the Medicine and Dentistry Application Conference. This annual flagship event is designed for GCSE and A Level students aspiring for a career in Medicine or Dentistry. It provides a valuable opportunity to guide and inspire the young generation in a situation similar to the one we once faced not too long ago.

Teaching & Education

We hold a variety of teaching and educational events. Notably, the Academic Seminar is held prior to the Health Awareness Day and involves lectures from doctors from various specialties which provide valuable information to prepare medical students for their future careers.  This is  complemented by practical skills sessions such as surgical suturing and OSCE examination techniques. KUMA has also held online lectures on a variety of topics including an 'Ask Me Anything' session on KMLE for those interested in transferring to Korea.
