김민진 선생님 Dr Minjin Kim

I joined the KUMA committee as I wanted to help connect Korean doctors across the UK. As an only Korean in my year during university, being part of KUMA and KUMA-students was a great way to get help and receive support whenever I needed them. Now I hope to serve that role for my juniors, and for my fellow colleagues working as junior doctors in the UK, to make sure that they know where to go to seek senior support. 

Something others don't know about me:

I run an Instagram page (@ukoreanmedic) where I upload photos/videos to capture my daily life as a Korean doctor in the UK. It started out as a study motivation page when I was a medical student, which has now transformed as I continue my journey in medicine as a doctor. 이민호 선생님 Mr Min Ho Lee

I was a longtime member of KoMDUK since my freshman year in 2008, the original student-run organization preceding KUMA. I have always enjoyed being part of this vibrant group of ethnic Korean doctors and medical students, fostering connections, networks and more. I now return as the academic officer in KUMA with a thriving passion for teaching and learning.

My goals for this year will be:

1. Undergraduate support: To create and run an academic department within KUMA with a focus on supporting our current medical students in their final exams.

2. Postgraduate support: To support the junior members of KUMA in their postgraduate specialty membership exams by harnessing the clinical expertise and previous experience present among the wider KUMA committee and members. 

3. Pre-university support: KUMA runs an annual event for Korean school pupils preparing for medical school entry applications in the UK, which I plan to continue as usual with fresh perspectives and direction as entry requirements change and evolve over time.

Something others don't know about me:

I am a qualified German glider pilot able to fly small engine-free planes! (though usually only in good weather!)

Dr Sanghoon Oh

I work as a Radiology Trainee based in Cardiff, Wales. I graduated from The University of Manchester and completed my Foundation Year training in Maidstone and Tunbridge Wells, Kent. 

I first joined KUMA in 2021 and since joining I have held the position of Foundation Year Rep and Event’s Secretary. KUMA provides an excellent platform for members to socialise with other Korean health care professionals from different specialties at varying stages of their career, which is a great opportunity to get some tips particularly if you are interested in applying for a specific specialty. Additionally, it is a rewarding experience to give back to the Korean UK community. 

Outside of work, I enjoy going to the gym, playing video games and golf. 

김수연 선생님 Dr Suyun Kim

Gojoseon, the first kingdom on the Korean Peninsula, was established based on its core motto, "Hongik Ingan," which means "to broadly promote the welfare of the humankind."How amazing is it for such a small country to have such an enormous yet thoughtful vision? I deeply believe that KUMA/S have inherited some sort of this mentality and will from the ancient Koreans. I feel very privileged to be a part of this amazing group of people who are willing to serve the Korean and local communities in the UK and the world in a broad sense with our medical knowledge and experience and humanity.

I first heard about KUMA through a friend only a year ago despite having lived and trained in the UK for the majority of my life. Having received much help and support from the Korean community during my formative years, I look forward to becoming a part of an organisation that is keen on giving back to the community.

Mr Keun Hwi Ahn

Mr Michael (Keunhwi) Ahn was born in Jeonju, South Korea, and raised in Toronto, Canada. He completed his undergraduate studies at the University of Southampton and foundation training in Leicester. He is currently a specialist urology registrar in the West Midlands. His passion lies within medical education, surgical training and mentorship; and endourology. He hopes to network with likeminded individuals and help those interested in pursuing a career in surgery.

Something others don’t know about me: I like boxing - I used to train when I was a student in Southampton. I also speak with a Jeolla-do accent.​

Mr Yang Myung Ma

There is a quotation from Pablo Picasso that I live by: “The meaning of life is to find your gift. The purpose of life is to give it away”. Although I am yet to find my gift, I know that I really enjoy helping others whether that is through education, charity or even if people just need a little chat. I have joined to share what I have learnt and experienced so that I can encourage others to also share their knowledge and skills.

It is only through consistent interaction and sharing that I believe will build a tighter community that is able to take on bigger and greater things. In order to achieve this, I hope to organise more events that help engage not just the Koreans within the medical/surgical field but to extend that to other Koreans who are living and studying in the UK. I recognise this may take time but if it takes six hours to chop down a tree, the first five must be spent sharpening the axe (Abraham Lincoln).

Hope to achieve: Help organise more charitable events for the Korean residents and students in the UK.

I like to dabble at watchmaking in my spare time! (No pun intended)

I’m really glad I got introduced to KUMA early in my training. At the KUMA MT, I met an incredibly supportive and selfless group of people who inspired me to get involved and be a part of the meaningful work they’re doing. Their dedication really stood out, and I’m excited to work alongside like-minded colleagues to help expand KUMA’s reach, especially within the Korean community in the UK. Having volunteered in my local community in different roles, I know how valuable it is to give back.

Through KUMA, I’m looking forward to continuing that and helping to create a more supportive environment for everyone.

As a member of the Korean UK Medical Association (KUMA) committee, I’m constantly reminded of the power of connection, communication, and compassion in healthcare. Just like how each organ plays its part to keep the body in harmony, our unity helps address the diverse needs of our community. "For just as the body is one and has many members, and all the members of the body, though many, are one body, so it is with Christ." This idea reflects our shared mission.

In today's fragmented world, effective communication is crucial, bridging gaps and providing clarity in healthcare. Love, defined by compassion and genuine care, guides us in treating each patient with dignity. But let's not forget the fun!

Having been part of the KUMAS committee for 3 years during medical school, I am excited to join the KUMA committee for the upcoming year. I look forward to spending time and networking with fellow Korean doctors across the UK and being able to give back to the community. 

Being a very extroverted and friendly person, I hope to bring my energy and exuberance to the committee and create a more fun and inclusive environment for our Korean doctors training in the UK!

I am a FY 1 doctor at Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham, where I also completed my medical degree at the University of Birmingham. Since first moving to the UK in 2018, I have benefitted greatly from the sense of community that KUMAS and KUMA have provided, and I’m now delighted to contribute as a committee member and Foundation Representative.

In this role, I look forward to supporting foundation doctors, introducing practical guidance on portfolios, and creating opportunities for students and junior doctors to connect, share experiences, and learn from one another. I am also keen to support those interested in preparing for the Korean medical license, building an environment where we can study and grow together.

Dr Won Young Yoon

Dr Yoon is a Foundation Year doctor at London North West University Healthcare NHS Trust. He completed his medical degree at the University of Manchester with an intercalated BSc (Hons) in Biomedical Engineering from Imperial College London.

Having been actively involved in KUMA events, he joined the KUMA committee this year as the FY Representative. He aspires to engage FY doctors nationwide and raise awareness of KUMA. In his role, he will support KUMA's mission by organising FY Welcome Days and Mentorship Days, as well as both formal and informal gatherings, to foster a strong sense of community and connection within the FY group while contributing to the broader vision of a unified and inclusive KUMA community.

Outside of work, he enjoys travelling and cycling.​

I was actively involved in KMDA-UK/KUMAS during medical school. I have very much enjoyed the experience of being able to meet friendly Korean medics in different areas/specialties and getting some advice from the seniors was just so invaluable. During the foundation years (and the start of the pandemic), I was in a small town, barely seeing any Koreans, and I really missed this community. By joining the committee, I hope to get to be a part of this lovely group again.
