KUMA Female Leaders Luncheon 2024

Our first event of 2024, KUMA Female Leaders’ Luncheon, was held at Fortnum and Mason in London on February 23rd. It was a gathering created to commemorate International Women's Day on March 8th, where we could share our experiences, encourage one another, and enjoy valuable time together. The event was attended not only by Korean female doctors but also by the president of the Korean Pharmacists Association and officials from the Korean Embassy in the UK, making the occasion even more meaningful. We engaged in diverse discussions over a delicious Afternoon tea, covering various topics, particularly those prepared by our KUMA President, Dr Eun Sol Kim, and Vice President, Dr Sejung Park.
저희 재영한인의사협회 (KUMA) 의 2024년 첫번째 이벤트로 여성리더모임 (KUMA Female Leaders’ Luncheon)을 지난 2월 23일날 런던 Fortnum and Mason 에서 가졌습니다. 이는 3월 8일, 국제 여성의 날을 기념하여 만든 자리로서, 저희가 서로의 경험을 공유하고 서로 격려하며 함께 소중한 시간을 가질 수 있는 날이었습니다. 이 모임에는 한인 여성 의사 선생님들 뿐만 아니라, 재영한인약사협회 회장님, 그리고 주 영국 대사관에서도 함께 해 주셔서 더욱 뜻깊은 자리를 가질 수 있었습니다. 맛있는 Afternoon tea 식사와 함께 다양한 주제로 이야기를 나누었고, 특히 저희 KUMA 김은솔 회장님과 박세정 부회장님께서 준비해주신 토픽들로 더욱 다양한 이야기를 나눌 수 있었습니다.
Firstly, Dr Sejung Park discussed gender equality in the healthcare systems of Korea and the UK. This provided us with an opportunity to explore differences in perceptions of gender inequality in the medical field between the two countries, discrepancies in hospital staffing, pay disparities, medical school enrollment, gender gaps in health, and various interesting research findings. Both the UK and Korea acknowledge the existence of gender inequality in the medical profession, and this session allowed us to highlight the issue from multiple perspectives and contemplate systemic solutions.
먼저, 박세정 부회장님께서는 한국과 영국 의료시스템의 남녀평등성에 관한 내용을 말씀해 주셨습니다. 그 내용에는 의료계 성불평등에 대한 두나라의 인식차이, 병원내 인력에 관한 차이, 페이, 의대현황, 남성과 여성 건강 격차 그리고 여러 흥미로운 연구 결과에 대해 알아 볼 수 있는 시간이었습니다. 영국과 한국 두 나라 모두 의료계 성불평등은 존재하고 있으며 이 문제를 다방면으로 탐구함으로써 불평등을 부각시키고 시스템 적인 문제를 생각해볼 수 있는 시간이었습니다.
Next, Dr Eun Sol Kim prepared an engaging exercise for us. The Implicit Association Test (IAT) is a test used to determine whether individuals unconsciously hold positive or negative attitudes towards certain concepts or groups. This helped us understand any unconscious biases we may hold towards specific groups, thereby enabling us to reflect on gender discrimination perpetuated by society. We empathized that the challenges faced as female leaders are no longer overt sexism or discrimination, but rather unconscious and socially constructed biases. Therefore, we discussed our hope to nurture the next generation of female leaders and become role models who can overcome such biases.
다음으로 김은솔 회장님께서는 저희에게 재미난 연습 교재를 준비 해 주셨습니다. 내재적 연관성 테스트 (Implicit Association Test)는 사람들이 무의식적으로 특정 개념이나 그룹에 대한 긍정적 또는 부정적인 태도를 가지고 있는지를 알아내는 데 사용할 수 있는 테스트입니다. 이를 통해 개인이 자신의 의식적인 태도와는 다르게 특정 그룹에 대해 어떤 무의식적 태도를 가지고 있는지를 이해하는 데 도움을 주어, 사회가 만드는 성차별에 관한 생각을 할 수 있게 해주었습니다. 저희가 여성 리더로서 직면하는 고충은 더 이상 공개적인 여성 비하나 성차별이 아닌, 무의식적이고 사회적으로 형성된 차별임을 공감하셨습니다. 따라서 저희는 차세대 여성 지도자들을 육성하고 롤모델이 되어 이러한 차별을 극복할 수 있는 여성 리더가 될 것을 희망한다는 논의를 나누었습니다.
As a small activity during the event, participants wrote words of encouragement on pieces of paper, which were then folded and placed into a bag for anonymous collection at the end of the event. It was a thoughtful way to conclude our meaningful gathering. Although the 2024 KUMA Female Leaders’ Luncheon was our inaugural event, we successfully concluded it with anticipation for future meetings next year and beyond.
이 행사 중 한 작은 이벤트로 참여자들이 격려의 말을 종이에 적어 접어 넣고, 이를 종료 후 익명으로 수집할 수 있도록 가방에 담았습니다. 이 뜻깊은 모임을 센스 있게 마무리하는 아름다운 아이디어였습니다. KUMA Female Leaders’ Luncheon은 처음으로 열린 행사였지만, 내년과 그 이후의 만남을 기대하며 성공적으로 모임을 마쳤습니다.
